- "Superman, I can't help but feel a little like Lex Luthor here. What is it you suspect me of, exactly?"
- —Maxwell Deter
Dr. Maxwell Deter was a villain in the series.
Though a good doctor in his profession, it all changed when he met and fell in love with one of his patients Lois Lane, thus allowing his personal feelings to get in the way of his better judgement. He became obsessed and infatuated with her and tried any means necessary to be with her, even if it meant separating her from the man she really loved: Clark Kent.
He was portrayed by Larry Poindexter.
Personality[]
Deter seemed to be sincere at first, but his true motives were later revealed when he kept giving Clark less time with Lois, craftily giving the excuse that her being with him and being told the truth would make it even harder for her to regain her memory.
He used his constant experience in being a professional doctor to his advantage, bamboozling Perry White who had recommended his clinic in the first place to come to his defense.
After Lois fell in love with him whilst still regaining her memory, he didn't hesitate to hypnotize her to make sure she loved only him and tried to destroy a machine that would restore Lois' memory which proves that he cared about only his own happiness more than hers.
When confronted by Superman over his actions, he tells him that this interrogation is making him feel like Lex Luthor, which seems to be relevant considering he was trying to steal Lois away for his own selfish desires in the same way.
History[]
Not much is known about Deter, except he became a successful doctor and psychiatrist for the Metropolis Neuroscience center and specialized in treatments to help amnesiac people regain their memories.
