Sam Lane is a recurring character in the series.
Sam Lane is the father of Lois and Lucy Lane. He is a prominent doctor, once married to Ellen Lane, before they divorced.
Personality[]
Sam is described by Lois as a workaholic, who though he loved his daughters, was disappointed that he didn't have any sons, giving very little time for an actual father-daughter relationship, which she has always deplored. Gradually, their relationship has truly improved and was in stark contrast with early episodes. Clark Kent, at first Lois’s partner, and then his love and wife, has played a critical role in this improvement, always trying to make Lois seize her father’s behavior. Besides, Sam has eventually succeeded in making up with his ex wife Ellen Lane, in season 4, leaving him with better relationships than how it started.

Requiem for a Superhero[]
In this episode, which is the first introduction of the character, he seems indeed giving more value for his job and for his career than for Lois, which makes the two of them quite pissed. He works as a doctor, being more precisely a surgeon and a cyberneticist: he provided boxers with prosthesis. Nonetheless, it turned out that boxers were rather transformed as cyborgs, such as Tommy Garrison, who seemed better than average men and other contenders. Allie Dinello was Sam’s friend and a significant figure for Lois, who considered him as a family member, with whom she had close bonds. Unfortunately, Allie was murdered, run over by a truck, which was not an accident. By the way, Sam participated in making cyborgs, able to cheat at box, unbeknownst to him.

While Lois was trying to make this year's Christmas special for once, she called her dad. However, she could not reach him as she was kept on hold for 20 minutes before she just hung up. It once again showed Lois how Samuel's work was his priority over his own family.
